Can we plan and design a resilient future, guided partly by science, by the past... and by science fiction?

Description

In the late 20th Century both industries and governments were told by experts to be lean and efficient, eliminating reserves with streamlined processes. A series of hard knocks have shown us the folly of ignoring resilience, the robust ability to roll with it, when life and fate deliver blows. Must we re-learn every lesson from the past? Or can we plan and design a resilient future, guided partly by science, by the past... and by science fiction?
