In the late 20th Century both industries and governments were told by experts to be lean and efficient, eliminating reserves with streamlined processes. A series of hard knocks have shown us the folly of ignoring resilience, the robust ability to roll with it, when life and fate deliver blows. Must we re-learn every lesson from the past? Or can we plan and design a resilient future, guided partly by science, by the past... and by science fiction?
